Building Your Community with Amanda Smith

“Everyone is a future friend.” – Amanda Smith

In the world of engaging in new circles of people, it can sometimes be scary or intimidating. You may be asking yourself, “how do I jump in?” or “but what if they don’t like me?” We’re here to remind you that yes, this is normal. Believe it or not, most of us have these thoughts when expanding beyond our comfort zone when it involves new relationships. We talked with Dallas Girl Gang’s Amanda Smith on the how-to’s of putting yourself out there (yes, like dating) and building your community both personally and professionally.

There are lots of reasons for branching out into new friendship spheres, such as a big move to a new city, or maybe you just launched a new business in the industry. Maybe you’re a new mom that’s looking for connection and wisdom from other moms. Whatever the case is, building relationships even in a social distancing environment can be much easier than you think. Amanda discusses finding social media groups with commonalities: do you like The Office? Join a fan group. Are you looking to engage with other professional women? Find your local industry groups (NACE, ILEA, etc.). Then, start talking to people! Sift through posts and comments, look for people that spark interest, and have common interests as you. Remember: it’s not weird to start a conversation. You’re all in there probably for the same purpose.

“If you truly want that community, it might take that 5 seconds of courage to be the

first one to make a move.” – Amanda Smith

Taking the initiative to foster and build your community is half the battle. So many friendships don’t start because someone is too nervous to make the first move! Open yourself up to the opportunity to have a conversation with a stranger; put yourself in situations that force you to talk to others. You never know what may come out of it.
